Review: Arnold Palmer: Memories, Stories, and Memorabilia from a Life on and Off the Course

Maybe you were lucky enough to follow Arnold Palmer at a golf tournament. My first chance was at the 1970 Dow Jones Open.

There was no bigger thrill than to watch Arnold Palmer drill 280 yard drives down the fairway.

The last tournament I had a chance to watch him compete in, was the 2000 Senior Open held at Saucon Valley, Pennsylvania. Even though he wasn’t in contention, he commanded the largest galleries in the field.

Arnold Palmer is one of those rare individuals that exude charisma. What makes him all the more appealing is his genuine, straight forward personality.

He has the ability to make eye contact with each and every spectator. Every fan feels as if they are personally acknowledged.

Today, Tiger Woods towers over the PGA Tour in much the same way Palmer did in his prime. But in comparing the two of them, it seems that Arnie enjoyed his run more, and had a hell of a lot more fun along the way.

An icon and an era defined...

The inspiration for this book was triggered when Palmer and his brother Jerry, were sorting through the sea of articles, photographs and memorabilia that were collected over the course of his career.

Wanting to somehow share the history behind these pieces, they felt a book would be an excellent way to give fans a personal “tour” of his warehouse.

It does a remarkable job of conveying the heart and soul of his career, personal life and stature as the defining personality of the sport as it entered the television age.

It takes you from his high school golf days, to his come-from-behind U.S. Open victory, to his impressive string of Masters victories and finally, his last round at Augusta.

Included, are many never before seen photographs from his personal collection. They poignantly illustrate a celebrated career and provide a glimpse of an era in golf that was personified by this extraordinary sports legend.

What makes this book different...

Arnie also included replicas of some of his favorite keepsakes to help illustrate his life on and off the golf course.

You’ll find the score card from his final round 65 at the 1960 U.S. Open, the Congressional Record that includes his speech to Congress, letters from President Eisenhower, Arnie’s Army buttons, and much more.

Few books can come close to conveying the same sense of feel for a man, a career or a period in history as this one.

If you think you’ve read all there is know about this golfing legend, you owe to your self to get a copy of this totally fascinating and absorbing autobiography.
